Parliament
Hello,

Welcome to my newsletter for Poplar and Limehouse, the best way to keep up to date on some of the things I do as a Member of Parliament. This update is only a few snapshots; it cannot cover the regular surgeries, ongoing case work, research and many enquiries we receive every day.

If you are a constituent and would like to get in touch, please feel free to send me an email: jim.fitzpatrick.mp@parliament.uk along with your name and address.

Best wishes,

Jim
Brexit latest
On Monday we had a further round of indicative votes on Brexit options.  On Wednesday a bill was passed to protect against a 'no deal' Brexit.  The Prime Minister and Jeremy Corbyn are now trying to negotiate a way forward.
Loan Charge
Yesterday I spoke in a debate on HMRC's 2019 Loan Charge which is unfairly affecting a number of constituents and causing significant hardship.
Puppy Smuggling
On Tuesday I joined colleagues in challenging the shameful practice of puppy smuggling; a crime that causes significant trauma to dogs.
Empowering women in rural Bangladesh
On Wednesday I attended an event organised by the Greater Sylhet Council on empowering women and creating employment opportunities in rural Bangaldesh.
Honouring the Victims of Christchurch
On Wednesday with colleagues, community leaders and the High Commissioner of New Zealand (above) we remembered those who were killed.  I have also joined colleagues in writing to the Home Secretary for the early release of additional funding for security at mosques, especially during Ramadan.
Tower Hamlets' Big Clean Up
Do join in our Big Clean Up next week if you can.  I'll be there by Chrisp Street Market midday on Tuesday with Mayor John Biggs.
Civil Service Pay
On Wednesday I met Public and Commercial Services Union reps to hear how far civil service pay has fallen behind inflation and the rest of the public sector.
Labour Backbench Housing Committee
On Monday I attended a briefing on how Labour would tackle our broken housing system.  You can read our housing paper here.
Maritime and Ports
On Monday I chaired a meeting of the APPG for Maritime and Ports where we discussed tidal and wave power, air quality issues and more.
Questions to the Prime Minister
The latest round of questions to the Prime Minister were on Wednesday.  Jeremy Corbyn asked about rising poverty, Universal Credit, Pension Credit, the 'triple lock' for older people and TV-licenses for those over 75.

This week in Parliament...

There were the indicative votes on various Brexit options and a petition debate on revoking Article 50.

There was a statement on the Windrush Compensation Scheme and all the stages of a bill to protect against a 'no deal' Brexit.

There was a statement about Brunei and sharia law and a debate on the 2019 Loan Charge.
