Parliament Parliament

Welcome to my newsletter for Poplar and Limehouse, the best way to keep up to date on some of the things I do as a Member of Parliament.

Yesterday the House of Commons 'rose' for the Summer Recess. During recess the work of an MP continues.  If you are a constituent do feel free to continue to get in touch with enquiries, case work and for surgery appointments.  You can send me an email on along with your name and address.

Best wishes

A New Prime Minister
Boris Johnson was elected leader of the Conservative Party.  He took over as Prime Minister, after Theresa May's last Prime Minister's Questions.  On Thursday he gave a statement on his Priorities for Government.
Overseas Students Visa Scandal
On Wednesday I continued to call for justice for the many victims of the TOEIC visa scandal - innocent overseas students pushed into destitution with few appeal rights.
Leasehold, Cladding and Antisemitism
In a debate held before recess I raised issues including leasehold, BSL, cladding, antisemitism in the Labour Party and road safety.
Ministry of Stories
Last week it was a privilege to hear pupils from Bishop Challoner School give speeches in Parliament as part of the 'Speak Up' programme.
Disability Benefits Consortium
Last week I attended the launch of an important report showing the disproportionate effect welfare reforms have had on those with disabilities over the past ten years.
Dudgeons Wharf Memorial Service
50 years ago five firefighters and a construction worker lost their lives in an explosion at Dudgeons Wharf on the Isle of Dogs.  Last week I attended a moving service in their remembrance.
Island Health Trust
After 4 years of campaigning for action on alleged financial mismanagement, this week we were glad to have this announcement which should bring the scandal to a satisfactory conclusion.  Well done to the local campaign!
Police Awards
Last Friday I joined the Borough Commander at the Tower of London to honour and recognise the bravery, professionalism and dedication of our police officers and staff.
NHS safe staffing
Last week I supported the Royal College of Nursing's campaign to address workforce shortages and for safe staffing across our NHS.
Supporting the 'Any Disability' Sign
I was happy to support this campaign for inclusive signage - communicating that not all disabilities are visible.
End Tiger Trade
In the past two weeks I have supported a number of animal welfare events, including this call for an end to the trade in Big Cats.
Tower Hamlets' Children's Services
Congratulations to Debbie Jones and all who work in our children's services on achieving a 'good' rating from Ofsted.

This week in Parliament...

There was an urgent question on Hong Kong and a statement on Universal Credit.

There were urgent questions on Personal Independence Payments and the decriminalisation of abortion, and a debate on body image and mental health.

There were urgent questions on British Steel and TOEIC, and a debate on youth services.

The Prime Minister spoke on his Priorities for Government and there was a debate to raise matters before the adjournment.
