Parliament Parliament

Welcome to my newsletter for Poplar and Limehouse, the best way to keep up to date on some of the things I do as a Member of Parliament. This update is only a few snapshots; it cannot cover the regular surgeries, ongoing case work, research and many enquiries we receive every day.

If you are a constituent and would like to get in touch, please feel free to send me an email: along with your name and address.

Best wishes,

Parliament and Brexit
The law to prevent a no-deal Brexit now has Royal Assent, a vote for an early General Election failed and Parliament was suspended until 14 October.  On Wednesday the Scottish courts ruled the suspension unlawful and this will now be decided at the Supreme Court next Tuesday.  I supported the amendment calling for a Deal.
Merchant Navy Day Memorial Service
On Sunday I read out a message from the Prime Minister in a moving service to remember the sacrifice and service of our Merchant Navy.  Above L-R: Tower Hamlets Speaker Cllr Victoria Obaze, Deputy Lieutenant for Tower Hamlets Mr Leslie Morgan, my wife Sheila and I.
Maritime in the UK
On Wednesday I sponsored a reception in Parliament to launch Maritime UK's new report as part of London International Shipping Week.
National Housing Federation
Yesterday I spoke at the NHF's conference on Service Charges and Leasehold Reform.
NLV Pharos
Yesterday I supported a maritime careers day for school children on the lightship NLV Pharos, moored next to HMS Belfast.  I visited NLV Pharos when I was Shipping Minister.  I landed on her deck in a helicopter from Glasgow Airport on my way to inspect north of Scotland lighthouses - a memorable experience.  Photos: top with Captain Rathbone and bottom right with Harry Theochari, chair of Maritime UK.
Welcoming Schools to Parliament
On Monday it was a pleasure to speak to pupils from Lansbury Lawrence Primary School at the excellent Parliamentary Education Centre.
Social Housing Waiting Lists
On Monday I attended a drop-in by the charity Shelter on our housing crisis.  I know all too well from my surgeries the shortage of social housing locally.
English National Ballet - Grand Opening
Yesterday it was a pleasure to attend the grand opening of the English National Ballet and their associate ballet school on City Island.

This week in Parliament...

Parliament only sat for one day this week before being prorogued.  In that day the Speaker announced his resignation, and there were emergency debates on the disclosure of communications relating to prorogation and the rule of law.  There was a debate on an early General Election and then the Prorogation.
